Javier Milei, Anarcho-Capitalist, Triumphs in Argentine Presidential Race

On November 19, 2023, Javier Milei, a libertarian congressman known for his support of the cryptocurrency Bitcoin (BTC), emerged victorious in the final round of the Argentine presidential elections.

Milei, an advocate of abolishing the central bank and the Argentine peso in favor of dollarization of the economy, has gained considerable attention in the cryptocurrency industry for his Bitcoin endorsements.

Milei has been a vocal critic of central banks, previously describing them as fraudulent and a mechanism for politicians to deceive honest citizens through inflation taxes.

In May of this year, he notably demolished a model of a central bank on a national television program, highlighting his disdain.

Regarding Bitcoin, Milei has stated that it represents the return of money to its original creators, the private sector, and serves as a barrier against politicians' attempts to seize wealth through inflation.

Inflation Tax, Bitcoin, and Global Trends

Inflation tax, a concept where the government's debt burden is effectively reduced due to the devaluation of money amid rising prices, has been discussed by Mexican billionaire Ricardo Salinas.

Salinas explained that inflation tax is akin to a covert confiscation of people's savings and advocated for protecting assets with Bitcoin.

While it remains unclear whether Milei will implement cryptocurrency-related policies, the recognition of Bitcoin as legal tender in El Salvador and similar movements in Germany have raised expectations in the crypto industry for potential legalization of BTC as an official currency in Argentina.

Javier Milei is set to assume the presidency on December 10, with a four-year term ahead.
