Shiba Inu Collaborates with D3 for '.shib' Domain: Embracing Web2 & Web3

Shiba Inu and D3's collaboration to launch the '.shib' domain marks a major stride in digital asset management, integrating Web2 and Web3 functionalities.

This innovative move promises to reshape how we use the internet, offering versatility and convenience in domain usage. Read on to explore how '.shib' is paving the way for a new internet era!

Partnership Announced for Acquiring '.shib' TLD with D3

Shiba Inu/SHIB announced on December 20, 2023, their partnership with domain-related company 'D3' to apply for and acquire a new top-level domain (TLD) named '.shib'.

This collaboration was revealed in the 7th issue of the SHIB-related web magazine 'The Shib', which was announced last month. D3 has also made a similar announcement.

A Top-Level Domain (TLD) refers to the last part of a domain name, such as '.com' in 'dexpick.com'. Currently, various TLDs exist like '.com', '.net', '.org', etc.

The partnership aims to acquire the new '.shib' TLD, as SHIB team alone couldn't secure the TLD, necessitating the collaboration with the domain expert 'D3'.

SHIB team and D3 plan to apply to 'ICANN', an international non-profit organization responsible for the allocation and management of internet identifiers, during the next application period.

'.shib' Domain to Support Both Web2 & Web3

The cryptocurrency industry has seen the emergence of various blockchain domains utilizing NFTs.

In late October this year, Shiba Inu launched the decentralized ID platform 'Shib Name Service (SNS)', enabling the acquisition of decentralized IDs ending with '.shib'.

However, Web3 domains like '.crypto' and '.eth' do not operate on the Domain Name System (DNS), limiting their functionality in essential internet tools like web browsers and email, while Web2 domains like '.com' and '.net' operate on DNS but don't natively support Web3 tools like wallets and digital IDs.

This partnership aims to resolve such issues by creating a TLD that supports both Web2 and Web3, enabling '.shib' domain owners to:

  • Use the domain in standard web browsers
  • Set up, send, and receive emails using the domain
  • Use the domain as a multi-chain, cross-platform ID

Understanding the '*shib' Asterisk Format

Users will be able to acquire domains in the '~shib' format. The provisional use of '' aims to prevent potential conflicts with existing domain names in DNS.

Domain name conflicts have been a significant issue, as highlighted last October when 'Unstoppable Domains' had to stop offering '.coin' domains due to such conflicts.

When the '.coin' domain offering ended, a compensation of "three times the credit of the amount paid at the time of purchase" was provided to the .coin domain owners, underlining the importance of preemptively addressing domain conflicts.

Early Access Registration for '.shib' Domain Begins

While acquiring the '.shib' TLD might take some time, early access registration has already started on 'D3's official website'.

On the .shib domain acquisition page, users can search for their desired domain name and check its availability, proceeding to create a D3 account.

Registering a '*shib' domain name now ensures becoming one of the first users invited at the official launch and securing the desired domain name before others. Furthermore, those who have already acquired their domain through Shib Name Service (SNS) can continue using their names with their *shib names.

Encompassing 5.3 Billion Internet Users

The successful acquisition and official launch of the '.shib' domain are expected to make it accessible to all 5.3 billion internet users, potentially involving communities and individuals beyond the SHIB ecosystem and welcoming a new billion users.

The SHIB team suggests imagining the possibilities, such as typing 'www.xyz.shib' to access one's .shib site or having an email address like 'info@xyz.shib'.

The use of '*shib' usernames on various social networks like X and Instagram also opens up various possibilities.

More details about the .shib domain can be found on 'D3's official website' and in 'The Shib: Issue 7'.
