Cryptocurrency exchange BitMEX has announced plans to send a physical Bitcoin (BTC) to the moon, engraved with both its public and private keys.

This news was initially reported by "Finance Feeds", and subsequently, BitMEX has reposted related posts on their official channels. To commemorate this event, BitMEX is also hosting a "Bitcoin To The Moon trading contest."

The public key engraved on the physical Bitcoin is "1MoonBTCixFH3XTrWRCbMpK23o74nQrA1Q", and as of the time of writing this article, the wallet contains approximately 1BTC.

Lunar Arrival Expected on February 23, 2024

This initiative is being carried out through NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services, with the rocket set to launch from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida at 2:18 AM Eastern Time on January 8, 2024.

The rocket is expected to arrive on the lunar surface on February 23, 2024.

Stephan Lutz, CEO of BitMEX, commented on this effort to send Bitcoin to the moon, stating:

We hope our pursuit to expand the horizons of technology and finance will inspire a new generation of innovators and pioneers to reach for the stars.

Fostering a future where cryptocurrency and space exploration go hand in hand, paving the way to explore uncharted territories and fuel the evolution of Bitcoin beyond Earth.

There has been an increasing trend of sending real coins of cryptocurrencies to the moon, with a plan to send "a physical Dogecoin to the moon" announced last November as well.
