Twitter has ended its NFT profile picture functionality, possibly influenced by Elon Musk's criticism of NFTs.
Meanwhile, the platform is gearing up for a 2024 launch of a P2P payment service, indicating a sustained interest in the cryptocurrency space.
Twitter Removes NFT Profile Picture Functionality
It has become apparent that Twitter has discontinued the feature that allowed users to set Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) as their profile pictures.
This functionality was first announced in October 2021 and became available in January 2022 to a select group of users in specific regions who were subscribed to the paid service, "Twitter Blue."
The feature enabled users to link their wallets containing NFTs (either ERC-721 or ERC-1155 tokens) and use them as profile images on Twitter. Notably, profile pictures derived from NFTs were displayed in a distinctive hexagonal shape.
While there has been no official announcement from Twitter regarding the termination of this NFT profile picture feature, it is currently unavailable.
Additionally, the description related to NFT profile pictures has been removed from the "Twitter Premium Support Page". These developments suggest that the service has been discontinued.
Elon Musk's Criticism of NFTs
Elon Musk has previously expressed skepticism about NFTs, characterizing them as nothing more than URLs to JPEGs.
Last month, he suggested that JPEGs should at least be encoded on the blockchain, indicating that such views might have influenced the recent removal of the NFT profile picture feature.
Despite the discontinuation of the NFT profile picture feature, Twitter recently announced plans to launch a Peer-to-Peer (P2P) payment service in 2024, as stated in a blog post on the 9th of this month.
This development has sparked increased anticipation in the cryptocurrency industry for the continuation and expansion of cryptocurrency-related functionalities on Twitter.
