Worldcoin Introduces Self-Managed Privacy Features with Iris Recognition Device Orb

In an era where personal data privacy is paramount, Worldcoin's latest announcement brings a breath of fresh air.Their Orb device, known for its advanced iris scanning technology, now comes with a groundbreaking feature: Personal Custody.

This revolutionary update empowers users to manage their iris data on their own devices, offering an unprecedented level of security and control. Learn more about how this feature is set to enhance user trust and privacy in the digital world.

Managing Your Own Vital Information with Orb

On March 22, 2024, Worldcoin (WLD) announced the introduction of "Personal Custody," a feature that allows users to manage their own iris data collected by the iris recognition device, Orb.

This move is aimed at enhancing privacy and security. Orb is a spherical biometric device that scans the human iris to distinguish between AI and humans, issuing a "World ID" exclusively to humans. Holders of this ID can earn the cryptocurrency WLD through Worldcoin's initiatives.

The device collects personal iris information, raising concerns about how this personal information is handled. However, with the newly announced "Personal Custody" feature, users can now store their biometric data on their own devices.

Changes Introduced by Personal Custody

Under the previous system, the options for handling collected personal information were either to encrypt and store it on a server or to delete it. The introduction of the personal storage feature eliminates the option to store encrypted data on a server.

In the new system, the encrypted facial and eye information of the user is sent to the user's personal device. Once the data is transferred from Orb to the individual's World App, it is automatically deleted from Orb, ensuring that no copies of the data exist anywhere else.

Users can also delete the data stored on their devices and use it for facial recognition in the World App.

Enhanced Security and Comfort with Self-Managed Personal Information

The introduction of the Personal Custody feature allows users to manage their critical biometric information themselves, enhancing the sense of security in using Orb authentication.

Additionally, the announcement highlighted the open-sourcing of core components of Orb's software, providing transparency about the software's functionality.

Despite global concerns about Worldcoin's Orb, a privacy and security audit report was published on March 14, detailing the audit results concerning Orb's collection of personal information.

This security audit was conducted by the third-party organization "Trail of Bits," which reported no vulnerabilities in the code that could be directly exploited in relation to the project goals of Worldcoin.
