Transitioning to Worldcoin's New SMPC System and the Secure Deletion of Old Iris Codes

Worldcoin has significantly upgraded its biometric data security by launching an open-source Secure Multi-Party Computation (SMPC) system, ensuring enhanced privacy and the safe deletion of old iris codes.

Introduction of a Groundbreaking Open Source SMPC System by Worldcoin

Worldcoin (WLD) announced the launch of a new Secure Multi-Party Computation (SMPC) system on May 15, 2024, which has been open-sourced to bolster the security of biometric data.

SMPC is a computational methodology that allows multiple parties to collaboratively compute without revealing their individual secret data. This approach not only protects the privacy of participants but also maintains data confidentiality during distributed processing and collaborative analysis.

Specifically, the system involves splitting specific confidential information into multiple parts that are shared among different parties. This design ensures that no single party can decipher the original confidential information alone, thus enhancing both privacy and security.

Safe Deletion of Iris Codes with the Transition to the New System

Worldcoin issues a "World ID" to prove human identity, which involves scanning users' eyes to generate iris codes. With the new announcement, it has also been reported that these iris codes are being transitioned to the new SMPC system.

As a result, important data generated by Worldcoin will be more securely protected, and after the iris codes are moved to the new SMPC system, the old uniqueness verification system that includes these iris codes will be securely deleted.

The newly announced SMPC system is available on the software development platform GitHub. (GitHub repository)

This system is intended to establish new standards for data protection, including the protection of biometric data, and is also described as effective against quantum computing.

Jannick Preiwisch, a data protection officer at the Worldcoin Foundation, commented on the new SMPC system and the deletion of past iris codes, emphasizing the enhanced security and privacy these advancements bring.

The community behind Worldcoin will continue to develop, test, and deploy cutting-edge technology focused on security, privacy, and data protection to improve online reliability and increase access to the global economy. The implementation of the new SMPC system will allow the company to provide a more secure and secure environment for its customers.

With the implementation of the new SMPC system, the Foundation has achieved the removal of past iris codes by permanently encrypting them into SMPC shares that cannot be used to identify individuals on their own. The development of this new system demonstrates an unparalleled commitment to further compliance with the EU General Data Protection Regulation and other data protection regimes worldwide.

It also contributes to advances aimed at providing consumers with more choice and control over their own data, including the ability to store personal information and de-verify their World ID.
