Cardano’s Highly Anticipated New Node “Cardano Node 9.0.0” Released | Chang Hard Fork Approaching

The release of Cardano Node 9.0.0 signifies a major step towards the Chang hard fork and the full implementation of decentralized governance in the Voltaire Era.

Discover how these developments will impact the Cardano network and the community’s role in decision-making.

Steady Progress Toward Full Implementation of Decentralized Governance

On July 8, 2024, the latest version of the node software supporting the Cardano (ADA) network, “Cardano Node 9.0,” was officially released. Cardano Node 9.0 is a highly anticipated update to the validator node software.

Charles Hoskinson, the founder of Cardano, explained last month that the release of Cardano Node 9.0 signifies the readiness for the Chang hard fork.

The Chang hard fork is the first hard fork in the “Voltaire Era,” the final phase of the Cardano roadmap. The hard fork is set to occur once 70% of the stake pool operators (SPOs) adopt the new node.

This hard fork will mark the official beginning of the Voltaire Era, which will see the full implementation of decentralized governance, allowing ADA holders to vote on key decisions.

Cardano Node 9.0 will initiate the first phase of governance functionality, with full governance support expected in “Cardano Node 10.0.”

Post-Node 9.0 Implementation Process

Once 70% of SPOs upgrade to the new node, the date for the hard fork will be set. Following the hard fork, the voting rights of Delegate Representatives (DReps) will be activated over a 90-day period.

DReps are one of the three main governance bodies in Cardano, alongside SPOs and the Constitutional Committee.

They act as voting representatives chosen by the Cardano community to make decisions on various proposals related to the network.

Unlike most mainstream blockchains where major organizations and development teams have significant influence over crucial decisions, Cardano aims for community-wide decision-making based on the “Cardano Constitution,” which lays out the fundamental rules.

Charles Hoskinson also elaborated on this upgrade in a video titled “Node 9.0.0: Chang in a Box,” released on July 9, 2024. He encouraged project and community members to become DReps.
