Polygon's New Token 'POL' Contract Goes Live on Mainnet

Part of the significant upgrade Polygon 2.0, POL is set to redefine how value is transacted over the internet.

Learn about its impact, the easy transition from MATIC to POL, and what you need to know if you're part of the Polygon ecosystem.

A Significant Milestone in Polygon 2.0

Polygon Labs, the development arm behind Polygon (MATIC), announced on October 25, 2023, that the smart contract for their new token 'POL' has been deployed on the Ethereum mainnet.

POL is set to launch as part of a large upgrade, 'Polygon 2.0,' and will replace the existing token 'MATIC' at a 1:1 ratio.

The term "Value Layer" mentioned in the post refers to a network on the Internet capable of value exchange.

While traditional internet allowed only for the exchange of information, Polygon's network will also enable the exchange of value.

The new token 'POL' is expected to bring multiple major advantages to the Polygon ecosystem.

What Polygon PoS and zkEVM Users Need to Know

According to Polygon Labs, users of Polygon PoS, Polygon zkEVM, MATIC holders, node operators, and stakers don't have to do anything special at this time.

Existing contracts will continue to function as they were originally designed.

Additionally, the conversion from MATIC to POL has been simplified.

As previously announced, sending MATIC to the upgrade-specific smart contract will automatically allow you to receive an equivalent amount of POL.
