Mastercard × Mercuryo Launches Debit Card for Using Cryptocurrency from Wallets

On September 5, 2024, cryptocurrency service provider Mercuryo announced the release of a new debit card, Spend, which allows users to directly utilize cryptocurrency stored in self-custodial wallets at any Mastercard-affiliated merchant.

Spend is a multi-blockchain compatible debit card that enables users to pay directly with cryptocurrency stored in their self-custodial wallets.

The card allows transactions at over 90 million Mastercard merchants worldwide. Additionally, it supports Apple Pay and Google Pay, and includes features such as the ability to manage wallet and card balances separately.

Cryptocurrency used for payments through Spend is converted directly from the wallet without the need for intermediaries, and is automatically changed into Euros, which are then transferred to the merchant.

Another key feature of Spend is its multi-chain compatibility, supporting various blockchains such as:

  • Ethereum
  • Solana
  • Injective
  • Near
  • ZKsync
  • Polkadot
  • TON

As of now, Spend is available only to users within the European Economic Area (EEA), but there are plans to expand its availability to other regions in the future.

Mastercard continues to see a rise in cryptocurrency-compatible cards. Recently, the popular wallet MetaMask also introduced the MetaMask Card, signaling the potential for even more crypto-compatible debit cards in the near future.
