Potential Leak of Selfie Photos, Names, and Addresses
It has come to light that an unidentified hacking group claims to have stolen personal information of approximately 300,000 customers from the Bitcoin ATM company "Coin Cloud," which filed for bankruptcy this February.
Coin Cloud, a Las Vegas-based enterprise, facilitated easy buying and selling of cryptocurrencies through specialized machines installed at retail locations.
The company had deployed over 4,000 cryptocurrency ATMs across the United States and Brazil, including those in one of Brazil's largest shopping malls, "BR Malls."
Despite filing for bankruptcy in the U.S. in February of this year, the hacking group claims to have stolen personal information from Coin Cloud.
The stolen data reportedly includes "70,000 selfie photos captured by ATM cameras, social security numbers, dates of birth, full names, email addresses, phone numbers, occupations, and addresses."
"Vx-underground," which reports on such incidents, has included the ATM users' selfie photos thought to be leaked in their coverage.
Additionally, it's reported that the hacker, who claims to have stolen this information from Coin Cloud, is currently sharing these claims through private channels.
However, there is a possibility that this leaked personal information might soon be published online.
The Need for Vigilance: Not Just Cryptocurrency, but Personal Data Leaks Too
While the cryptocurrency industry often makes headlines for hacks that steal digital currencies, there is a significant number of instances where personal information unrelated to cryptocurrencies is also being compromised.
The immediate impact may not be evident when personal information is stolen, but there is a risk of such information being misused later, especially when comprehensive details like selfie photos, dates of birth, names, email addresses, phone numbers, and addresses are taken together.
While "cryptocurrency theft" incidents receive substantial attention, the leakage of "personal information" often does not get as much coverage.
Therefore, it becomes crucial to remain vigilant. In cases where there's a possibility of personal information leakage, it's advised to change passwords and pay extra attention to regular emails, among other precautionary measures.
