On August 14, 2024, MetaMask, a prominent cryptocurrency wallet, announced the launch of the pilot phase for the "MetaMask Card," the world's first Mastercard payment card that enables direct payments from the MetaMask wallet.
The MetaMask Card is a cryptocurrency-compatible debit card made possible through a partnership between MetaMask, Mastercard, and Baanx.
This card allows users to make everyday payments using the cryptocurrencies managed within their MetaMask wallets.
Payments can be made at any store worldwide that accepts Mastercard, and the card also leverages Linea’s efficiency to facilitate fast and low-cost payments at online retailers.
Pilot Launch in the EU and UK
The pilot program for the MetaMask Card will begin in the EU and the UK. Users in these regions can sign up for the MetaMask Card, add it to Apple Pay or Google Pay, and start using it immediately.
Initially, the card will support payments using USDC, USDT, and WETH on the Linea network.
Users living in the regions targeted by the pilot program will see a "Card" tab appear on the left navigation bar of the MetaMask portfolio. Through this tab, users can set up their accounts and cards.
MetaMask has also announced plans to expand the service to more regions in the future. Users can sign up through a dedicated form to receive notifications when the service becomes available in their area.
