Ethereum's Major Upgrade "Dencun" Faces Potential Delay Until 2024

Get the latest insights into Ethereum's major upgrade, Dencun, which faces potential delays until 2024.

Originally scheduled for 2023, setbacks in testing have raised concerns.

Find out the reasons behind the delay, the impact on Layer 2 solutions, and why the Ethereum community believes it's crucial to prioritize extensive testing over a rushed implementation.

Possible Delay Until 2024 Due to Testing Setbacks

Ethereum (ETH) has announced that the next major upgrade known as "Dencun" may face delays.

Dencun is a combination of the names for Ethereum's execution layer upgrade "Cancun" and its consensus layer upgrade "Deneb."

The upgrade aims to improve scaling by increasing block space and reducing Layer 2 transaction fees.

Originally slated for implementation in the latter half of 2023, delays in testnet testing have emerged as a concern.

Reports indicate that if testing is not completed by Ethereum's "Devconnect" event this November, the launch could be postponed until 2024.

This information was disclosed during the "Consensus Layer Meeting 118" held on September 21, 2023.

Tim Beiko, a core Ethereum developer, said, "If we can't launch on the testnet by Devconnect, the chances of launching on the mainnet before the Christmas holidays are slim. It's not an ideal time as people will be away."

Impact on Layer 2

One of the Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) included in Dencun, EIP-4844, known as "Proto-Danksharding," claims it can reduce Layer 2 transaction fees by up to 1/100.

This promises to further advance the use of Layer 2 solutions like Base, Arbitrum, Optimism, and zkSync.

Although the delay of Dencun's launch until 2024 has been reported, the number of Layer 2 users is steadily increasing.

There is a growing sentiment that instead of rushing the implementation, sufficient testing should be carried out first.
